Step Beyond's individual-oriented program applies the unique needs and goals of each youth to a step by step program designed to be completed in 6 - 8 months. The young man will pass through four levels of freedoms and responsibilities as he shows mastery of them. He will begin the program in a very structured setting, with constant adult supervision and support, as he learns basic skills. By the end of the program, he will have graduated from a simulated independent environment in which he displayed mastery of the skills taught during his stay at the Step Beyond Transitional Living Center.
LEVEL ONE
Young men coming to learn and grow at the Step Beyond home will ideally spend no time in Level 1. This merely represents to them the environment in which they were living prior to coming to the transitional living center, an environment with few (if any) freedoms or responsibilities. Level 1 exists in case the incoming youth cannot yet manage the privileges of Level 2.
LEVEL TWO
The youth begin the Step Beyond program at Level 2, as a reminder to them that they have taken the first step towards independent living already. There are new freedoms and responsibilities they will now learn to handle. At Level 2, the youth will:
- be enrolled in college or trade school or will apply for a full-time job
- begin saving 80% of their paycheck
- do their own grocery shopping and cooking
- maintain the home's standard of cleanliness
- attend their Transitional Living Skills course
- meet weekly with Skills Trainers for scheduling
- attend group and individual therapy weekly
In addition, a program tailored to their unique situation will be put into action, and they will be responsible for the upkeep of that program as well. As they learn all of these basic skills and become acclimated to the expectations of the program, they will have constant adult supervision and support.
LEVEL THREE
After demonstrating success in managing the new responsibilities placed upon them in Level 2, the young men will continue to maintain their core responsibilities in Level 3. They will also learn to manage increased freedoms with the continued support of the Skills Trainers.
LEVEL FOUR
In Level 4, the young man shows mastery of the core responsibilities with an even greater measure of freedom. He is allowed to manage his own daytime and nighttime activities. He is also now a mentor to those just beginning the program and will be required to teach the skills he learned early in the program.
LEVEL FIVE
When the youth has gained the trust and respect of the Step Beyond team, he can advance to Level 5, a simulated independent living environment. He will:
- reside in a separate area of the house
- learn to pay rent and utilities
- manage his activities and curfew as approved by the Skills Trainers
His choices and activities will be monitored but he will be free to make and learn from mistakes. Experience can be the greatest teacher and in Level 5, the soon-to-be adult will be able to learn by experience while being shielded from some of the more dire consequences of poor choices.
GRADUATION
We at Step Beyond look forward to the exciting time when your son will take his first independent steps in the real world. After completion of Level 5, he will be ready to find his own apartment, hold down his own job, build his own friendships, manage his own money, and otherwise live as a functioning adult. Continued support in this time of transition could be provided in the form of daily visits by Skills Trainers if necessary. |
